Critiques Slums Smokey Mountain

Ik heb bij smokey tours 3 tours gedaan: de slumtour, de fietstour en de markttour. Allemaal waren het gewelige ervaringen. Ik vond het heel bijzonder om in de sloppenwijk te zijn en te zien hoe de mensen daar overal een oplossing voor vinden, terwijl ze zo weinig hebben. Elke familie heeft een eigen onderneming. De tourleider woont zelf ook in een sloppenwijk en kende alle gewoontes. Gek genoeg voelde ik me continue heel veilig. De mensen waren ontzettend aardig en beleeft en vroegen niet om geld.

When in Manila you should definitely take a tour with Smokey Tours to get to know the authentic Philipino way of life. I have done several tours; the (new) cemetary tour, the bicycle tour and of course the slum tour. What I liked a lot about the tours was that the tourleaders themselves are all locals who grew up living in or around the slum areas. This gave a really personal touch to the tours. Because they grew up in these areas they can tell everything you want to know about these places. They can speak English very well and are trained intensively to be good tourleaders. And this shows, tourleaders are great! The bicycle tour is a more mainstream tour which shows you several areas of Manila and gives you a great fealing of the way of life in the city. The cemetery tour and slumtour include a trip with a tricycle and a Jeepney, two local methods of transportation which is a really great experience!

Tijdens deze toer kreeg ik de mogelijkheid een stukje van Manila te zien dat ik normaal gesproken nooit gezien zou hebben. De tour leader informeerde mij goed over het leven in de sloppenwijken van Manila en maakte het mogelijk om de interactie aan te gaan met de mensen die hier wonen.

Het heeft veel indruk op mij gemaakt om te zien hoe sterk de bevolking van de sloppenwijk is en hoe zij op vele creatieve manieren proberen rond te komen. Doordat je geen foto's mag maken tijdens deze tour krijg je het gevoel alsof je gewoon bij mensen op bezoek bent ipv dat je "aapjes aan het kijken" bent. Absoluut een aanrader voor iedereen die een realistisch beeld wil krijgen van deze miljoenen stad.

The Smokey Mountain slum tour provides a clear, yet somewhat confronting insight in the lives of hundreds of people living in the slum. The local tour guide knew to explain their way of living and, more importantly, gave me a feeling of gratitude for what I have and for contributing to this community by doing the tour. At the end of the tour we visited St Martins, where slum children receive education, food and a place to stay if needed. All the happy children saying "welcome, visitors" made my eyes run wet for a moment.

In the afternoon, we did the bicycle tour through Manila. What a way to go! We saw all the highlights of Manila (Intramuros, Rizal Park, Manila Bay, Remedios square, and several other places; 20 stops in total), but the best part must be the small streets and the daily life we saw. In just one afternoon you can see all of Manila, something that is not possible if you go by other types of transport.

Een tour door Smokey Mountain heeft een diepe indruk op mij gemaakt. De levensomstandigheden van de lokale bevolking is slecht: geen drinkwater, geen elektriciteit en geen sanitair. Dat is wel even wat anders dan het leven hier in Nederland. De gids, ook afkomstig uit deze wijk, vertelt alles over het dagelijkse leven en dat is soms best wel heftig. Ondanks de zware levensomstandigheden is de lokale bevolking heel vriendelijk, vrolijk en optimistisch. De wijze les voor mij: wees gelukkig met wat je hebt en geniet van het leven.
